Knowledge Is Power: The AWAKETOGETHER Summit

by Eugena Brooks

We all are familiar with that phrase. We connect with it in many ways all the time. Our health should be no exception.

The sleepapnea.org American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) AWAKE Initiative last year brought much to the table in those terms. There was a survey gathering information from people suffering with sleep Apnea concerning their experiences dealing with the impact of this sleep disorder on their health and lifestyle and difficulty using the CPAP.  The survey gathered information regarding negative experiences with equipment, working with durable medical equipment (DME) providers, and inadequate instructions from healthcare professionals.

This information was forwarded to a meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It was reinforced by testimonials by patient panelists to encourage more research in all areas of the effects of sleep apnea and the comorbid conditions it can lead to or affect. The 2018 survey also produced a comprehensive report to serve as a guideline for all to reference and move forward from. The ASAA could not have accomplished all of this had it not been for the participation of the patient panelists.

Patient panelists are people like you and me that follow the social media pages, take the surveys and gather at meetings like the one with the FDA to share our life experiences dealing with sleep apnea. The information provided by doing this provides valuable insight and understanding of the needs of suffers and promotes the need for more research. It usually takes very little time and effort to keep up with but provides valuable input needed to further research that will provide better results for those of us dealing with sleep apnea.

This year during ASAA’s Sleeptember there will once again be a gathering, this time in San Francisco of patients, healthcare providers and innovators working to find a cure for sleep apnea. Last year’s event was a wonderful experience that I will never forget, and I am so glad that I pushed myself to do it.  I can’t wait to participate this year and I hope that you will decide to join us too. Registration is easy just click the link and sign up for one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences of your life. See you there…
