Coordinator's Area
We at the ASAA office are dedicated to supporting A.W.A.K.E. coordinators. Please make sure to update us on changes to your e-mail address so you can receive our e-newsletter and other support.
Is your group listed as active in our A.W.A.K.E. group database? If not, please contact us.
To be considered active, groups must have met the following four requirements:
- Your group has paid its annual A.W.A.K.E. dues of $150. Existing groups can pay online by using our Donate to the ASAA page and writing "A.W.A.K.E. dues" in the comments section along with your A.W.A.K.E. group’s name. If you are not sure if your dues are up to date, please contact us.
- Your current coordinator has signed a Statement of Understanding and sent a copy to our office.
- We have updated information about your group and its coordinator(s). Please use the About My A.W.A.K.E. Group form.
- Someone who attends or coordinates your group completes the Meeting Summary form after each meeting and returns it to the ASAA. This ongoing feedback about your group is very important because it helps us to maintain contact with your A.W.A.K.E. group and use your experiences to help other groups.
Written and Audiovisual Resources
It is useful to have educational materials available at meetings. The ASAA has provided you with copies of many of our publications, in the back pocket of your guidelines. Feel free to photocopy any materials that are printed on our letterhead, including our list of publications, to distribute to your members. Please check out our resources to learn what publications and educational videos are available. A list of Top Ten A.W.A.K.E. Meeting Topics compiled from other groups may also help you plan.
Disclaimer for A.W.A.K.E. Meetings
As you begin each meeting, please share the following information with the attendees.
"The American Sleep Apnea Association and its A.W.A.K.E. Network do not endorse any company, products, or health care providers. A.W.A.K.E. meetings are intended to be a source of general information only, not for individual medical advice. Please remember that information, opinions, and advice presented here are from many sources and may or may not pertain to your situation. Your personal health is unique and must be discussed with a qualified health professional. A.W.A.K.E. is designed to support, not replace, the relationship between you and your doctor."
Recognizing Meeting Sponsors
Please acknowledge the sponsors of your group at each meeting and express your appreciation for any specific support (for example, if a home health care agency provided refreshments or paid for a newsletter mailing). Many groups maintain a list of all sponsors, in alphabetical order, to be added to all materials.
To conduct its programs and activities, the ASAA receives support from members' dues; individual, foundation, and corporate donations; and annual contributions from members of the ASAA Industry Roundtable. Members of the Industry Roundtable support the A.W.A.K.E. Network by making unrestricted tax-deductible contributions to the ASAA.
We encourage A.W.A.K.E. coordinators to acknowledge the support of all current Industry Roundtable members at each meeting, as well as local companies that may have provided assistance for that particular meeting.
We look forward to working with you.
FAQs for Current and Potential Coordinators
- Who can use the A.W.A.K.E. name or ASAA logo?
- Can I recommend certain products or companies? Are there things I cannot say?
- What if our coordinator changes?
- How does the ASAA support my group’s success?
Who can use the A.W.A.K.E. name or ASAA logo?
The "ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Network" is a trademark of the ASAA. "A.W.A.K.E." stands for "Alert, Well, And Keeping Energetic" with each word capitalized and a comma between "Well" and "And." In the term "A.W.A.K.E.," the use of periods is key as "AWAKE" is a trademark of another association.
A.W.A.K.E. Network groups who are considered active may use the A.W.A.K.E. name and may include the ASAA logo in their material, such as newsletters and invitations to meetings.
Can I recommend certain products or companies? Are there things I cannot say?
The ASAA does not endorse or recommend (or imply endorsement or recommendation of) any company, product, or health care provider. This is one reason we use generic terms, not trade names, and require that A.W.A.K.E. groups do the same. Most important, the ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Network is not to be used for marketing purposes. An entire section of the guidelines is devoted to these issues, and coordinators are always encouraged to call the ASAA office whenever they have a question.
What if our coordinator changes?
If the coordinator of your group changes, the new coordinator must read the guidelines and send a signed copy of the Statement of Understanding for our records as well as an updated About My A.W.A.K.E. Group form. Contact us to receive blank forms if needed.
How does the ASAA support my group’s success?
A.W.A.K.E. group dues help defray the cost of the support that we provide to groups. As described in our page For Potential A.W.A.K.E. Coordinators, A.W.A.K.E. coordinators receive an e-newsletter and a subscription to the ASAA newsletter Wake-up Call, as well as phone support as needed. Active groups have permission to use our logo and the trademark "ASAA A.WA.K.E. Network." Coordinators receive a 50 percent discount on ASAA resources such as our DVD and newsletter reprints. We include active groups in our searchable online database, and refer our members and callers to the A.W.A.K.E. group closest to them. We also highlight the A.W.A.K.E. Network in Wake-up Call.
Even more support is coming. Please look for announcements via the e-mail address your coordinator provided to us.
